When you can start you first colonies move from sokoto up to Tunis, most of the times the Ottomans are out and if you are them it'll be even easier. Before 1870 you need to have Sokoto and the African parts of Oman conquered. And I'll do it in vanilla because I've forgotten which nations are in sub-saharan Africa, but when the scramble begins move quickly through them, they don't stand a chance. For the next part I'm going to assume your not Britain or France, if either of those it'll be easier.
